The use of PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances) in consumer products is subject to regulatory restrictions already in place in Europe and the United States, due to their environmental persistence and health risks.
European Union:
With the Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 and subsequently with the Regulation (EU) 2020/784, the European Union has banned the use of PFOA and its salts from July 4, 2020. Additionally, a proposal for a global restriction of over 10,000 PFAS was submitted to the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) in February 2023, and the regulatory process is ongoing, with implementation expected by 2026-2027.
United States:
Several US states – including California, New York, and Maine – have already passed laws that ban the use of PFAS in consumer products (including clothing, cosmetics, and waterproofing sprays), starting from January 1, 2025. At the federal level, the "Forever Chemical Regulation and Accountability Act" (May 2024) is under discussion, which provides for the complete elimination of non-essential uses of PFAS within 10 years.
